Woman killed when car drives into lake

AVON PARK -- A 48-year-old woman died early Sunday morning when she drove her car into Lake Lelia.

According to a Florida Highway Patrol report, Tonia C. Harmon of Avon Park was driving a 1998 Nissan Maxima east on W. Martin Road approaching S. Saxon Lane at about 12:45 a.m. She failed to make the curve and continued traveling east toward the boat ramp for Lake Lelia.

The car went down the boat ramp and approximately 40 feet into the lake, the report said. Harmon was unable to exit the vehicle and died at the scene "from injuries sustained in the crash" the report said.

Harmon's passenger, 52-year-old Charles L. Staton of Avon Park, received minor injuries.

A blood alcohol test was pending, the report said.

Dive/Rescue Team  (by: Jacques Cousteau  -   12/25/2012)

With all of the lakes we have in Highlands County, why don't we have a Dive/Rescue Team? The one that did respond was from Polk County and at that distance it is more of a Recovery than a Rescue. Members of the team could be from on duty EMS or Sheriff's Office personnel so they could respond faster.
