Aktion Club receives international recognition

Special to the News-Sun

AVON PARK - Aktion Club of Highlands County recently received its first place Kiwanis International Single Service Award in 2012.

The club won first place in Florida in September and advanced to the international level for competition. Members were notified in December that they won and their trophy was delivered. This is the second year in a row that the local club has won first place in the single service category.

The service project that the club entered was based on thr work done with Keep Highlands County Beautiful. The club's project had five phases that stretched across the county. First was maintaining College Drive in Avon Park quarterly by cleaning the roadside. The club also tackled an illegal dump site in Sebring that took two days to clean. Members then moved to Lake Placid to help an elderly couple clean their roadside. Club members helped collect recyclables at the Run to the Heartland event in Sebring and finally they participated in the Great American Cleanup.

The club was also recognized by Kiwanis International by receiving the 2011-2012 Distinguished Club award. This award provides recognition to individual sponsored clubs for their overall performance in the combined areas of club administration, membership and leadership development, Kiwanis-family involvement, and service and fund-raising efforts. Club performance is judged against a pre-established standard of excellence.

Distinguished Club recipients receive a club banner patch in recognition of their achievements. This is also the second year for the club to receive this honor.

Aktion Club is a civic club comprised of individuals with disabilities. There are 60 members in the Highlands County club, which meets every third Thursday of the month. The local club is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Sebring.
